South Dakota DLR AI funding

State money for AI discovery and training. Here is how to use it well.

South Dakota’s Workforce Development Competitive Funding for AI Adoption reimburses awarded businesses for half the cost of an AI discovery session and half the cost of AI training, paid to the business once a third-party consultant or trainer has been paid. Kodiak is a Sioux Falls consultant and trainer that delivers both.

The program

What DLR funds, in plain terms.

01

Category 1 · AI Business Discovery

50% cost share, up to $5,000 from DLR

A consultant-led session that identifies where AI can help the business, the tools to implement, the cost and timeline, and the expected return. That is a Kodiak Business Assessment: the roadmap is the deliverable the program asks for.

02

Category 2 · AI Training Implementation

50% cost share, up to $20,000 from DLR

Hands-on employee training on the tools the business is adopting, with attendee lists, dates, and completion certificates. That is Kodiak AI Training, on site, built around your team’s work.

03

Category 3 · AI Awareness

$1,000 per employee, up to $10,000

Paid to the business for employee time spent on free third-party awareness courses. Kodiak does not sell this category, but we will point your team at the right course if you ask.

Where it stands

The 2026 application window has closed.

Applications closed August 7, 2026. Award decisions went out in early September. Awarded businesses must complete the work by June 30, 2027, and Category 1 awardees can apply for Category 2 funding through November 12, 2026 if funds remain.

If you were awarded: you have state money that has to be spent with a qualified third party on a deadline. If you were not: the state has signaled interest in AI adoption, and Kodiak will let you know if a new round opens. Either way, the discovery call is free.

How Kodiak fits

Built to meet the program’s paperwork.

01

Invoices that satisfy DLR

Every Kodiak assessment invoice describes the discovery process, meeting dates, tools recommended, estimated implementation cost and timeline, and anticipated return, which is what the program requires for payment.

02

Training with the receipts

Training invoices itemize the sessions, attendees, dates, and cost, and every participant receives a completion certificate.

03

Help with the final report

DLR asks awardees for a final report. We supply the substance for it as part of the engagement.

Fine print

What Kodiak is not promising.

Kodiak is not affiliated with DLR and cannot determine your eligibility or guarantee an award. Program terms, deadlines, and amounts are set by the state and can change. Confirm current details at dlr.sd.gov before relying on them.
